The Noon Number: Possession’s 9/10 of the Law

59.76 – Corsi-for % for the Capitals at even strength five through their first three games of the season, second-most in the League behind only Nashville, and have allowed the second-fewest shots-against per game at just 25.3. Naturally small sample size warnings abound… but for comparison’s sake, the Caps were out-attempted by 146 last season (49.04%, 18th in the League).

Of the three games so far, the best performance was against the Islanders, who the Caps out-attempted 45-31 at even strength en route to a 2-1 win.

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the early leader for the Caps in even-strength shot attempts? Not Alex Ovechkin, but another Russian in Dmitry Orlov, who has put up 47 in the first three games. Ovechkin isn’t too far behind with 42, tied with Tom Wilson and Lars Eller, while John Carlson (43) rounds out the team’s top five.
