The Noon Number: Captain Bounceback

A look at a rare night for the captain (and not in a good way) - and what to expect next time out

NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins Don Wright-USA TODAY Sports

5.2 - Average number of shots on goal for Alex Ovechkin in games following a zero-shot performance, regular season and playoffs.

Last night’s loss to the Penguins marked just the 15th time in his career overall in which he was held without a shot, and just the third time ever in the postseason (the last time being way back on May 7, 2012 against the Rangers).

But he’s never quiet for long, with at least two shots on goal in the following game (and often many more; in almost half of those games, he’s racked up a minimum of six shots). He’s also averaged around a point per game after being held shotless, racking up eight goals and eight assists in 14 outings.
