A look at how the Caps took control in the third period last night

3 - Number of shots on goal given up by the Capitals in last night’s third period, a frame in which they both tied the game and scored the late game-winner to take a 2-1 series lead.

That’s the lowest shots-against total in a single period of playoff hockey since the first period of Game 6 last year (also against the Penguins, an eventual loss), and the fewest given up in a third period since their 2-0 loss in Game 5 against the Flyers the previous round.

As for the last time they gave up three or fewer shots in the third period of a win... last night was the first time in the Barry Trotz era.
