Columbus struck first in this game, cashing in on a Washington power play. You read that right. Shorthanded, Columbus turned an Alex Ovechkin turnover into a Matt Calvert 2-on-1 goal the other direction, giving the Blue Jackets their first first-strike of the series and a 1-0 lead.

But with 6:30 remaining in the opening frame, Nicklas Backstrom threw a pass across the crease that struck David Savard’s skate, bounced into the air, and rolled down Sergei Bobrovsky’s back to tie the game 1-1 at the intermission.
