The Noon Number: Five-0

71 – Five-on-five shot attempts without a goal through three playoff games for the sextet of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov, T.J. Oshie, Andre Burakovsky and Jakub Vrana. That group – arguably the Caps’ half-dozen most offensively skilled forwards – has put 35 of those 71 attempts on net, but have yet to put one in net (though, of course, Ovechkin and Kuznetsov each have two power-play goals, and Oshie has one of his own).

The Caps aren’t getting much help from the blueline in terms of five-on-five goal production, either – the seven defenders the Caps have utilized have 61 attempts and 27 shots on goal (led by Michal Kempny’s 14/9 split) without a tally.

So far against Columbus, the Caps have four five-on-five goals, and those belong to Devante Smith-Pelly, Jay Beagle, Tom Wilson and… oh, yeah, Lars Eller.
