A look at how the Caps have fared in close games over the years

16 - Number of one-goal losses in the playoffs for the Capitals under Barry Trotz. Dating back to the 2015 postseason, the Caps have played 41 playoff games overall, with 29 of them falling into the one-goal category - and only 13 of those ending up in the win column for the Caps (including a grand total of zero out of the two this year).

It’s not all on Trotz, either; going back to the team’s first playoff run in the Alex Ovechkin era, they’ve played the seventh-most playoff games (99) and yet have played the most one-goal games with 69 - one more than Pittsburgh, who have 55 more postseason games under their belt over that same span. They also have the most one-goal losses... with 37.
