Your savory breakfast links:
- Recaps and other assorted musings on last night’s victory under the stars from us, Vogs, NHL, Caps video (Trotz, Ovechkin (and on NHL Tonight), Backstrom, Holtby, Niskanen, Wilson, Vrana, Carlson, handshakes), WaPo, WashTimes, NBCSW, AP, NHL (and again), The Score (with pics), Sportsnet, TSN, USA Today, Sporting News, NBC Sports (and again), Frankovic, Toronto Sun, Peerless, NoVa Caps, RMNB, and PPP.
- Excitement was in the air early on, as the Caps moved into the locker room and got to see the venue for the first time - but no morning skate to get acclimated. [Caps video (arrival, Trotz, Ovechkin, Backstrom, Holtby, Oshie, Niskanen, Carlson, Kuznetsov, Wilson), Dump ‘n Chase, WaPo]
- Led by troops of bagpipers and flanked by midshipmen, the entrance of the two teams was quite something. [Caps video]
- Of course, that was nothing compared to the puck drop, which featured the gold medal-winning US Curling team - and a perfectly placed stone. [NBCSW, NHL]
- Things got interesting midway through the third, when a power outage caused a 15-minute delay (and resulted in most broadcasts being pushed to NBCSN for the final five minutes). [WaPo, NBCSW, TSN, Puck Daddy, AP, Sporting News]
- The Caps peppered Frederik Andersen with five goals through the first two periods, and that was enough to earn him his first hook of the season. [Toronto Star, AP]
- And that’s #40 - and #598 - for Alex Ovechkin. [NHL, USA Today]
- The curlers weren’t the only Olympians in attendance; during the second intermission, the US Women’s hockey team got an awesome ovation from the crowd. [NHL]
- Well... the team minus Hilary Knight, who had another engagement in New York. She’s forgiven for her absence, though, because it was awesome:

- It took 20 years for Team USA to win their second gold medal, but the hope is that this win spawns a new generation of women hockey players. [WaPo]
- Rockville’s own Haley Skarupa talked about winning gold in Pyeongchang; she also made sure her teammates saw the most important landmark in the DC area before last night’s game: Jeff Halpern’s Astro Doughnuts. [WaPo, Baltimore Sun]
- After a rough month of February, the Caps started March with a bang; is this the team we’ll see down the stretch? [NBCSW]
- Buried in the spectacle of the evening was news that GM Brian MacLellan has been given a multi-year contract extension. Congrats, Mac! [RMNB, NoVa Caps]
