The Noon Number: First-Strike Capabilities

7 – Number of combined goals scored by the Capitals in the first period of their last two games, with a four-spot over the Rangers in last night’s win preceded by a three-goal opening-period outburst in Montreal two nights earlier. That marks the first time they’ve had at least three goals in back-to-back first periods since putting three on the board against Tampa on November 10, 2008 and following it up with a three-goal first against the Hurricanes two nights later.

If that seems like ancient history, consider the fact that to find the last time they did it in consecutive road games, you have to go all the way back to October 25-27, 1985 when they took the original Jets to a 7-7 tie in Winnipeg and followed it with a 4-2 victory in Chicago.
