There were some more fireworks in the second period, this time on the score sheet.
Tom Wilson sprung Lars Eller on a gorgeous pass from the center ice boards, and just like that the Lartian was in on a breakaway. But as we all know, here on the Red Planet is his home turf, and he buried it to make it 1-0 Capitals.
But the chief antagonist of our story would answer back. Evgeni Malkin fired a slap pass to Sidney Crosby beside the crease, and with a smart redirection Crosby guided into the net to tie it.
And then, with just a minute remaining in the frame, Crosby was the last player to get a paddle on a bouncing, hopping, tumbling pop-up of a puck in the crease, and tapped it in to get his second of the night.
It’s 2-1 Penguins after two.
Third period ahead...
