The Noon Number: Offense is Futile

A look at some high-scoring games that fell in the ‘L’ column

NHL: Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

15 - Number of regular-season games in franchise history in which the Capitals have scored at least six goals in an eventual loss - and only twice in the 21st century, with last Thursday’s OT defeat joining an 8-7 OT loss last January. Prior to last season, it hadn’t happened since a 7-6 loss to the Flyers back in March of 1992.

Amazingly (or perhaps not so much), it’s happened against Pittsburgh more than any other team, with four of the 15 high-scoring losses coming at the hands of the Penguins. Five of the losses overall - and three of the four vs. Pittsburgh, including the last two - have been in overtime.
