The Noon Number: Statement Start

7Number of goals scored by the Capitals last night in a 7-0 victory, tied for the second-largest shutout in a season opener in NHL history. The Caps fell just two goals short of the record, set by the 1975 Canadiens when they opened their season with a 9-0 win over the Kings, and were one shy of the record by an incoming Stanley Cup Champ (Detroit bested the Rangers by a score of 8-0 way back in 1943).

The Caps also set a new franchise high in goals on opening night; coming into last night, the most a Capitals team had ever scored in the first game of the year was six, something they’d accomplished four times (the most recent one a 6-2 win over the Islanders back in 2003).
