The Noon Number: Free Hockey

6 – Number of times the Capitals have gone to overtime in their last eight games, including last night’s win in Raleigh. That’s the most times they’ve gone past regulation over an eight-game span in the Alex Ovechkin era (2005-present); they’ve won four of the six, with one win coming via the shootout.

This recent stretch of 60+ minute games accounts for over half of their total overtime and shootout games so far this season; prior to their last eight games, they’d only been past regulation five times, the most recent being back on November 12 against Edmonton (an eventual shootout win).

Ovechkin leads the Caps in overtime game-winning goals, picking up his third of the season last night. That’s tied with Tampa’s Brayden Point for the League lead, and equals his career high for a single season (2010-11 and 2013-14)… with 41 games remaining in this campaign.
