A look at how the Caps have fared in Game 1 of the playoffs over the past decade

.500 - The Capitals record in the opening game of the playoffs during the Alex Ovechkin era. Since 2007-08, the Caps have appeared in the postseason eight times and have won Game 1 of the first round four times (once in overtime) and lost four (twice in overtime).

The strange thing, at least as far as probability goes, is that their record in those series runs almost opposite to that opening game result.

Take a look:

Game 1 2007-2016

Game 1 Date Opponent Game 1 Series
Game 1 Date Opponent Game 1 Series
4/11/2008 PHI W 5-4 L
4/15/2009 NYR L 4-3 W
4/15/2010 MTL L 3-2 (OT) L
4/13/2011 NYR W 2-1 (OT) W
4/12/2012 BOS L 1-0 (OT) W
5/2/2013 NYR W 3-1 L
4/15/2015 NYI L 4-1 W
4/14/2016 PHI W 2-0 W

Of course, that certainly doesn’t mean you should root for the Caps to lose tonight. If anything, it means that Game 1 is just Game 1 - so don’t get too high or too low with the outcome, whatever it may be.
