The Noon Number: Holtbeats

10 – Consecutive decisions which Braden Holtby has won, marking the longest such streak by a Capitals netminder since Jose Theodore won ten-straight from January 13 through February 7, 2010.

Now, it’s worth noting that Holtby’s streak includes two games (Toronto and Pittsburgh) in which he started but was pulled while trailing, only to have the Caps come back to tie the game and hand Philipp Grubauer the decision (a win and an overtime loss, respectively). Then again, Theodore’s streak started with a relief appearance, and a shootout win at that (which, of course, would have been a tie back in the day, something Olie Kolzig got saddled with during a 10-0-1 stretch back in 2000).

So Holtby has been bailed out during his streak and Theodore’s included a non-start shootout win, leaving Pat Riggin’s 10-game win streak from January 27 to February 18, 1984 as perhaps the only “pure” 10-game goalie win streak in club history. Coincidentally, that streak came during the Caps’ one Jennings Trophy-winning season, something they’re in line to win again this season.
