Nicklas Backstrom Tallies 500th Assist

It’s official: Nicklas Backstrom has joined the 500-assist club.

The assist, a primary helper on T.J. Oshie’s early first-period strike tonight, makes Backstrom the 139th player in NHL history to reach the 500-assist mark (14th among active players) – and obviously, as the franchise leader in helpers, the first Capital to ever do so. He’s also just the 10th Swedish-born player to tally 500 assists in the NHL.
