The Noon Number: Dynamite Duo

A look at the combined forces of the Caps' top defensive pair in Round 1

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

1 - Number of goals in the Capitals' first-round series against Philadelphia for which Matt Niskanen and Karl Alzner were on the ice, the lone goal coming in Game 4. The Caps were historically stingy overall, limiting the Flyers to a franchise-low six goals over the six games, but a big reason for that (aside from the play of Braden Holtby) was the work done by Niskanen and Alzner.

Niskanen logged a team- and series-high 25:32 in average ice time during the series (20th in the League) while Alzner checked in with an average of just under 23 minutes a night - and both logged a significant amount of that time on the Caps' near-perfect penalty kill.

The duo will have their work cut out for them as they get ready to face Sidney Crosby and the Penguins later this week.
