A look at an unusual quirk in the Caps' schedule

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

6,640 - Number of days since the last time the Capitals played three home games in four nights, dating all the way back to late December 1997. The Caps took on Pittsburgh, Ottawa and St. Louis in that three-game set from December 26-29, dropping the first two games before beating the Blues.

They've already assured themselves a better fate on this homestand, taking the first two games against the Penguins and Maple Leafs, and will look to make it three for three with a visit from the Rangers tonight.

They've got recent history in their favor to do so. The Caps have been doing some serious damage on home ice this season, going 26-5-2 at Verizon Center; they lead the NHL in goals per game (3.30), rank second in power-play percentage (23.8), fourth in goals against per game (2.21) and eighth in penalty kill percentage (86.7)
