Reports of the Capitals' demise were greatly exaggerated.

Scoring got started in the first five minutes after Tom Wilson forechecked Ottawa into oblivion before feeding Mike Richards at the door step for a baby-candy-taker.

Then the Caps' power play struck, with Alex Ovechkin potting a textbook passing play for his 43rd on the year.

Then, THEN, Nicklas Backstrom got on the score sheet with a cheeky little flip that put the Caps up 3-0 and caused Ottawa to take a #FirstPeriodTimeout.

It's 3-0 Washington after the first.
