The Noon Number: Throwing Away Their Shot

44 – Number of shots on goal for the Capitals in their shootout loss to the Devils last night, with just one beating New Jersey netminder Keith Kinkaid.

That checks in as the highest shot total in a loss since suffering a similar 2-1 defeat (albeit in regulation) at the hands of the Sabres in November 2014, and the 14th-highest shot total in a loss since the start of the Alex Ovechkin era. It’s also just the tenth time over that span in which they’ve had at least 44 shots and just one goal (all losses).

The Caps’ overall record when putting at least 44 shots on net is a surprisingly mediocre 13-10-6; they’ve outshot their opponent in all 29 of those games, and only twice did the other team have as many as 40 shots on their side of the ledger.
