The Noon Number: Jump Start

A look at how the Caps have done in opening frames this season

NHL: Winnipeg Jets at Washington Capitals Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

0 - Number of minutes the Capitals have trailed in the first period this season. They’ve given up just four first-period goals through ten games, none of which have moved their opponent into the lead.

On the flip side, they’ve led for roughly 88 of the 200 first-period minutes, scoring a League-leading 13 goals (and often jumping out to 2-0 leads, as we’ve previously noted). They’ve led after 20 minutes in eight of their ten games (6-1-1), the most of any team - the next-closest teams are Chicago and San Jose, who have both taken a lead into the first intermission six times (with matching 5-1-0 records).

Since Barry Trotz took over behind the bench, the Caps have the best winning percentage in the League when leading after one period, going an insane 53-3-4 (.885) over that span.
