The Noon Countdown: Spreading the Wealth

Counting down the days to the 2015-16 season with a look at how many Caps got to participate in shootout fun

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

19 - Number of days remaining until the 2015-16 season. But it's also...

...the number of Caps' players who registered at least one attempt in the shootout last season, a franchise record. Nicklas Backstrom led the way with 10 turns, while Evgeny Kuznetsov was tops in successful shootout attempts with five goals (on nine attempts).

Of course, the main reason why so many players got to partake in everyone's favorite skills competition goes back to December 16, 2014, when the Caps and Panthers engaged in the longest shootout in NHL history. It eventually ended as a 2-1 loss for the good guys, with 11 goals scored (including a beautiful tally by, of all people, Brooks Orpik) and Nick Bjugstad's game-winner in the 20th (!) round.

Fun stuff.
