Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Capitals announced today that they will open up their home slate on October 10 as they play host to the New Jersey Devils.

Per the team:

ARLINGTON, VA. - The Washington Capitals, in conjunction with the National Hockey League, today announced the club's home opener will be on Saturday, Oct. 10, vs. the New Jersey Devils. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The complete 2015-16 NHL schedule will be released tomorrow.

The Capitals are 6-1-1 all-time in season openers at Verizon Center. Washington posted a 4-1-0 record against New Jersey last season and outscored the Devils 17-6. Nicklas Backstrom led the Capitals with five points (3g, 2a) in five games against New Jersey in 2014-15 and Braden Holtby posted a 4-1-0 record with one shutout, a 1.20 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage against the Devils last season. The Capitals are 98-74-13-13 all-time against New Jersey and 58-29-6-7 against the Devils at home.

This will mark the fourth time in franchise history that the Caps host the Devils in the home opener - with all three of those prior meetings turning into lopsided affairs. The first meeting on opening day in DC was October 8, 1993, a 6-3 loss for the good guys; they won the next two, however, outscoring the Devils by a combined 13-3 in those two matches (a 6-1 win on 10/6/01 and a 7-2 thrashing on 10/9/10.
