Your savory breakfast links:
- Recaps of last night's thrilling OT win from us, Vogs, Monumental video (Trotz, Ward, Holtby, Backstrom, Niskanen, Wilson, Orpik, Carlson, Capuano, Isles room, highlights), NHL.com, Puck Daddy, AP, ESPN, CBS Sports, WaPo (gamer, blog), CSNW (gamer, blog), WashTimes, Frankovic, NBC4, Caps Outsider, RMNB, DSP, StarsandSticks, and from up I-95, Newsday, NY Times and Lighthouse Hockey.
- Nicklas Backstrom: clutch. [ESPN, CSNW, RMNB]
- Tom Wilson: beast... [CSNW, RMNB, CapsOutsider, Bloguin]
- ...and according to the Islanders, an idiot. Guess Wilson won't be hanging out with Kyle Okposo anytime soon. [LHH, The Score, PHT, NY Post]
- The Caps' stars needed to step up. They did. [NHL.com, National Post, Newsday]
- There were some pretty great celebrations on the ice after that game-winning goal - but none better than a couple of former Caps in the studio. [WaPo]
- Breaking down the best and worst from Game 4. [WaPo]
- Happy locker room! [Monumental video]
- Poor Brooks Orpik's face took quite a beating last night, first from John Carlson's skate... and then from a friendly Isles fan offering him a drink. [Puck Daddy, The Score, Sporting News, WaPo, CSNW, RMNB, LHH, Uproxx, FTW]
- From Elias: Nicklas Backstrom's goal just over 11 minutes into overtime gave the Capitals a 2-1 victory over the Islanders and deadlocked their first-round series at two wins each. Washington took a 1-0 lead in the game on a first-period goal by Alex Ovechkin, but the Islanders tied the score just before the end of that period and there was no further scoring until Backstrom's overtime tally. Backstrom has scored goals in 16 different playoff games in his NHL career and Ovechkin has also scored a goal for the Capitals in nine of those games, including both of Washington's wins in this series.
- The Islanders' chances in this series rely solely on shutting down the Caps' top duo of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Welp. [THN]
- Home ice, shmome ice. [Newsday]
- One change the Caps need to make? Get. The puck. Out of here. [Along the Boards]
- News and notes from yesterday's pregame skate for the Caps:
- In general. [Dump 'n Chase, Monumental video (Trotz, Johansson, Burakovsky, Wilson, Ovechkin, Okposo, Cizikas, Rinkside Update/Chimera)]
- Shuffle up and deal, Barry! [CSNW]
- The Caps have been behind the eight ball all series long, and were looking for a better start in Game 4. [WaPo]
- One way they could do that? Use their mighty power play, which had struck just once in the three games prior to last night... and stayed that way after last night. [WaPo (and again), WashTimes]
- Another postseason, another barrage of questions for the Caps' captain. [CSNW]
- With injuries up front, there were questions about what the lineup would be last night. The verdict: Marcus Johansson, Michael Latta and Andre Burakovsky in, Curtis Glencross out. [WaPo (and again), WashTimes (and again), CSNW,
- Burakovsky was pumped and ready to make his NHL playoff debut. [Dump 'n Chase]
- And from the Islanders' side of the rink:
- The home team was looking forward to a Game 4 challenge. [Islanders Point Blank]
- Kyle Okposo has been making an impact for his team. [Islanders Point Blank]
- So far the Isles have limited the damage caused by Alex Ovechkin. Clearly - he only has five points. [Newsday]
- Yes, Islander fans. We could hear you. Congratulations. [LHH]
- A look back at the series thus far. [RMNB, LHH]
- It may be old and decrepit and broken-down and missing seats and tiny, but Nassau Coliseum holds a special place in the hearts of the Islanders. [WaPo]
- It does look purty underneath a rainbow, though. [CBS Sports]
- The Islanders' organization issued the most non-apologetic apology EVER after some visiting Caps fans were reportedly harassed. [WaPo]
- The Hershey Bears are starting to get ready for the playoffs - but they may have to do so without their #1 goaltender, Philipp Grubauer. Sorry, guys. [Patriot-News]
- #DCRising, Caps' ratings...falling. [WaPo]
- All hail the rare and beautiful DC sports trifecta! [WaPo (and again)]
- Finally, happy 71st birthday to Bob Paradise, happy 54th to Bob Mason, and raise a glass in honor of the late Peter Zezel, who would have been 50 today.
