Mike Green Hits the Century Mark

Green wraps up a month of milestones in style with his 100th career goal

Greg Fiume

In the history of the NHL, only 80 defensemen have scored at least 100 goals in their career. Tonight that exclusive club has a new member: Mike Green, who hit triple digits earlier this evening against the Sabres.

Throughout Green's career ups and downs, what has remained constant is the pure skill he brings every night. There aren't many who have his skating ability and his distinctive stride, his moves with the puck and his wicked wrist shot. When he's on, there are few defensemen who are more fun to watch - something which has been on display plenty this year:

It's become a trademark of his over the course of his eight seasons and change in the NHL, as he's racked up highlight-reel goal after highlight-reel goal (and more than a few overtime-winners) en route to 100. Tonight he adds just one more achievement to an already stellar resume that includes two-time Norris Trophy finalist and the record-holder for longest goal-scoring streak by a defenseman.

Green becomes just the 11th active blueliner to achieve the milestone, which is fairly impressive on its own - what makes it all the more impressive, however, is the rate at which he scored those 100 goals, doing so at a speedy 0.21 goals-per-game pace. That not only ties him for the best rate among the 11 active players in the century club (joining Shea Weber atop the pack), but also puts him into the top-twenty all-time, rubbing elbows with some hall-of-fame names.

Next up on the list? A spot in the top-three highest-scoring defensemen in franchise history, just 13 goals away... watch out, Calle Johansson.

And now, just a few of Green's best goals...

Going coast-to-coast for his 3rd career goal - October 25, 2006:

First career playoff goal - April 11, 2008:

Setting the record for consecutive games with a goal by a defenseman:

The most recent appearance of Game Over Green - May 4, 2013:

And of course, tonight's milestone goal... a beauty of a wraparound:

Congrats, Mike!
