Capitals Trade Mathieu Perreault to Anaheim for John Mitchell and a Pick

Per @VogsCaps, the Capitals have traded Mathieu Perreault to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for minor leaguer John Mitchell and a fourth-round pick in 2014.

The move leaves the Caps with 23 players in camp, and likely gets them under the salary cap (or awfully close to it, thanks to the “bonus cushion”), so the roster would seem to be pretty set for Opening Night. Congrats, Tom Wilson.

As for Perreault, the Caps lose a productive, perhaps under-utilized player and definitely a fan favorite – as we wrote during the summer, “[F]or now Perreault looks to be penciled in as a terrific third-line center, one who’s making his teammates better, and one who’s very likely to out-perform his current contract, possibly by a great deal… which is exactly what the Caps have him on for at least one more season.” But the writing was on the wall for Perreault once Eric Fehr and Martin Erat started taking shifts at center during training camp. So best of luck to him in his reunion with Bruce Boudreau in Anaheim, and let’s see what these 2013-14 Caps can do.
