- Finally, today we raise a glass to the 130th anniversary of the birth of Lester Patrick (born 30 December 1883), who, along with his brother Frank Patrick, helped forge the modern NHL and made innumerable contributions to the sport of hockey. A very short list of their accomplishments includes the introduction of both the red and blue lines, the penalty shot, backup goaltenders, the boarding penalty, and the stick salute. Lester’s grandson Dick Patrick is the president and minority owner of the Capitals.
