Wednesday Caps Clips: The Captain Captures History

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Recaps and other assorted musings on last night’s crazy shootout win over the Bolts from us with quotes), Vogs, Monumental video (Oates, Ovechkin, Alzner, Grubauer, Brouwer, Backstrom), NHL.com, AP, SportsXchange, PHT, WaPo, CSNW (gamer, blog), Frankovic, Peerless, F Street Faithful, RMNB, RtR, TBO.com, and Raw Charge.
    • In a season (and career) of awesome performances, Alex Ovechkin raised the bar another notch with his four-goal game last night…and added another ecstatic, spontaneous celebration to his repertoire. [WaPo, Puck Daddy, RMNB]
    • From Elias: “Alex Ovechkin scored four of the Capitals‘ five goals in their shootout win against the Lightning. It was the third four-goal game of Ovechkin’s nine-year NHL career; the others came a little over a month apart in the 2007-08 season (Dec. 29 at Ottawa, Jan. 31 vs. Montreal). The only other active players who have scored four or more goals in a regular-season NHL game more than once are Marian Gaborik (2) and Teemu Selanne (2).”
    • If you missed it, you have to check out John Walton‘s amazing call of Ovechkin’s late game-tying tally. If you caught it live… relive the magic. [Capitals Voice]
    • And add another line in the franchise’s record books for Ovechkin, as his two power play goals catapulted him past Peter Bondra for the most PPGs all time – and earned him a call from Bonzai himself. [Monumental video, Caps Outsider]
      • Congrats, Ovi!! [Caps]
    • In a game full of turning points, one of the biggest ones was the boarding major handed down to Tampa’s Richard Panik after he rudely introduced Karl Alzner ‘s face to the wall. [WaPo, CSNW, PHT]
    • Understatement alert: Mike Green did not have the best of starts to last night’s game…but I don’t think anyone noticed. Except Braden Holtby. And the future Mrs. Ovechkin. And, y’know, everyone else. [CSNW, Sporting News, PHT, CBS Sports]
    • A few nights after his first career NHL win, Philipp Grubauer added another first to his resume: his first shootout win. Stick with the Caps, kid, and it’ll be the first of many. [SHOE]
  • The four-goal explosion from the captain last night is further proof that he’s heating up and rounding into form – and with the Olympics just eight weeks away, that’s got Team Russia smiling. [THN]
  • After being shuttled back and forth between Hershey and DC, Dmitry Orlov has officially hit the 30-day mark – meaning no fleeing to the KHL – and earned a promotion in the process. [WaPo, CSNW, RMNB]
  • The Caps have scored a lot of goals lately, and a lot of those Caps’ goals have come off the sticks of their defensemen. [WaPo]
  • 14 years ago the Caps were getting some equally good blueline production. Step into the Wayback Machine with us (and Mike Vogel), won’t you? [Dump ‘n Chase]
  • Checking in with the team on gameday. [Monumental video (Oates, Rinkside Update/Alzner, Chimera ruins some Rinkside Update takes)]
  • Satisfied with Brendan Shanahan, listening to expansion talk, and more from the Board of Governors’ meeting. [CBC (and again), Puck Daddy]
  • If you didn’t know this already, here’s a newsflash for you: having the puck more equals winning more games… [ESPN]
  • …and eventually the NHL might just adopt better ways to track that whole having-the-puck thing. [WaPo]
  • Amid his team’s mini-winning streak, Martin Erat is still hoping for a trade. [Fourth Period]
  • Alex Ovechkin: one-dimensional player. K. But it’s a pretty badass dimension, right? [KK]
  • Checking in on the future of the team:
    • A quick cup of coffee with the Caps and it was back to Hershey for Patrick Wey, who was sent back down yesterday. [Caps, Patriot-News, SHOE]
    • The 2013-14 Hershey Bears are a riddle, wrapped in an enigma, swathed in mystery and the faint scent of chocolate. [Patriot-News]
    • Power rankings for Week 10 in the AHL. Looking for the Bears? Keep scrolling… [THW]
    • Celebrating a couple of USHL alums who made their mark with the Caps over the weekend. [USHL]
    • Get excited… those awesomely ugly Royals’ jerseys are hitting the ice in mere days. [BCTV]
