Capitals-Flames: Postgame Quotes

Via the team…

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on how the team got back into the game after the first period…

“We talked about how we had 40 minutes to try to get it back. We talked about a couple things we did wrong in the first period and not to give them another one. We wanted our D [Defense] to be more involved, but not do crazy pinches and give them a free goal – just stay focused and get it one at a time.”

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on defenseman Connor Carrick’s first NHL goal…

“I’m glad he scored. Greenie [Mike Green] and Carly [John Carlson] will get the majority of the minutes, so he’s not going to get as many opportunities offensively. Your first goal weighs on you, and I’m sure that relaxes him so much. He made some great plays, some great reads tonight.”

Washington Capitals center Brooks Laich on the play of goaltender Michal Neuvirth

“I think Michal is very underrated. He’s been working hard in practice. He comes in, and he’s always calm and poised -that sort of the nature of the guy. He just kind of locked it down. I think he had one little bobble behind the net, but other than that he rises up big in the shootout, gets the job done. We’re happy for him.”

Washington Capitals defenseman Connor Carrick on his play on the ice tonight…

“[Tonight] was more how I imagined my first game going, not so much the goal, but managing the puck – being good defensively. I was happy to get back on the horse and have a performance that I felt I could build on.”

Washington Capitals defenseman Connor Carrick on his first NHL goal…

“Momentum’s a big part of the NHL hockey game. You hear a lot of coaches mention it throughout the league, so anything I can do to swing the momentum our way, I’ll be happy to do, and I was lucky to do it tonight.”

Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner on the play of goaltender Michal Neuvirth…

“Neuvy [Michal Neuvirth] was great. He’s got something to prove. A lot of people are counting him out, and a lot of attention is going to Holtsy [Braden Holtby]. Sometimes people forget how good of a goalie Neuvy is and we needed that big time out of him. So, we are happy to get it.”

Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley on tonight’s game and what allowed his team to let Washington climb back…

“Very happy with the effort, obviously disappointed with the result. I told the boys, ‘It’s one thing to play in the NHL, and there’s a different way to win in the NHL. Just don’t be glad to be in the NHL, when you have a 3-0 lead, you have to find a way to keep it. We’re not going to start tonight on game one saying ‘Oh, we’re young and this.’ There’s absolutely no excuse. We had some bad decisions in the second period, we let them back in the game and then had two absolutely unnecessary penalties in the offensive zone by two veterans. That can’t happen, that just can’t happen. I feel for the guys because we wasted a real good effort.”

Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley on how he handles a game with some late mistakes by his team…

“It’s okay, but we have to learn. Mistakes are acceptable. It’s a game of mistakes. Now, let’s learn from them.”

Calgary Flames forward T.J. Galiardi on taking the penalty in the third period that lead to the game-tying goal…

“You’re praying that they’re going to kill it off, but like I said, it’s not like I do it all the time. You learn from it and move on.”

Calgary Flames forward T.J. Galiardi on how he handled his own disappointment and the teams’…

“You don’t want to get frustrated; you just want to learn. We’re a young team, we’re not going to make excuses in here. Everyone’s accountable for their mistakes just like I am. I came in and apologized to the boys in the end, and you know what, I think after, we still could have won the game in overtime. We played well and even after they scored that goal [that tied the game], we showed good character coming back. I think we easily could have won.”

Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano on how the power play-for both teams allowed the Caps back in it…

“Our effort was good tonight but we struggled a bit on the power play. Whenever you get those chances, especially in the third [period] when we had a few, we have to be better. We have to find a way to kill those penalties at the end, but they’re a good team, a good offensive team. I thought we had a lot of chances. We generated a lot, I thought, in the overtime; we played well. It sucks to lose that one because, obviously, of the lead we had. But in the NHL, if you get out to early leads, it’s never safe in this league now because of power plays and all that sort of stuff, and they made us pay.”
