The Noon Number

Presswire

3 - Consecutive seasons in which the Caps have relied on a rookie goaltender come playoff time (Semyon Varlamov in 2008-09 and 2009-10, Michal Neuvirth in 2010-11). In fact, since the Caps went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998, no team has had more playoff starts (26) or appearances (27) by rookie goalies than Washington (Philadelphia is second with 21 and 26, respectively; Carolina is third with 21 and 23, all of which came in the same season).

In all likelihood, the Caps will add to these numbers with rookie netminder Braden Holtby poised to start Game 1 in Boston on Thursday.
