  • Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1996, “Jim Carey became the first goalie in Washington Capitals‘ history to record 30 wins in a season, with a 7-1 victory over the Islanders, in New York. Carey broke the team record of 29 held by Don Beaupre.” Since you’re wondering, Olie Kolzig topped 30 wins five times thereafter and Jose Theodore did it last year and sits at 27 this season.
  • In that same game, “Washington’s Peter Bondra scored three straight goals in a 4:21 span late in the third period (his 6th career hat trick) and Sergei Gonchar had a goal and three assists in the Capitals’ 7-1 win over the Islanders, at Long Island. “
  • Also per the HHoF, on this date in 1989, “Washington beat the Islanders 3-2, to clinch their first Patrick Division championship. Dino Ciccarelli scored his 9th goal in his third week with the team, as the Capitals extended their team-record home winning streak to 7 straight games.”
