Tuesday Caps Clips: Canadiens @ Caps Game Day

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Previews of this the third meeting of the season between the red, white and blue and le bleu, blanc et rouge from Vogs, Peerless and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Habs Eyes On The Prize for coverage from the other side of tonight’s match up.
  • To refresh your memory, the Habs beat Michal Neuvirth 3-2 just before Thanksgiving in D.C. and the Caps took the rematch in Montreal a week later thanks to some late-in-regulation heroics and Nicklas Backstrom‘s shootout goal.
  • Updates from the injury front, where Backstrom sounds like he’s good to go, Semyon Varlamov is out for another two weeks, and Alexander Semin is “fine,” but left practice early. Hmm. [WaPo]
  • Fresh power rankings are out with the Caps down two to fourth at CBSSports, down three to fifth at SportingNews, down four to eighth at The Hockey News, and down seven (!) to ninth at CBC.
  • A second Mike Green GEICO ad has surfaced. Check it out. [FanShot]
  • Elliotte Friedman‘s weekly must-read didn’t include any Caps nuggets per se, but a Lou Franceschetti mention is always noteworthy. [CBC]
  • Hey, what do you know – no Alex, no ratings. [Truth & Rumours]
  • Varly on the Olympics and the tradition of the Rookie Dinner. [RMNB]
  • In case you somehow missed “The Caps Rap” yesterday, check it out (with bonus interview with the creator). [Puck Daddy]
  • Fox5 did three spots from Kettler yesterday morning which… umm… well, good on them for being out there on Zorn D-Day. [MyFoxDC]
  • Tonight’s the gold medal game at the World Juniors, and John Carlson (tied for the tourney lead in plus-minus) is definitely one to watch. [CBC]
  • Oh, and Marcus Johansson has been suspended and won’t be taking part in the bronze medal game. [Hockeysverige.se (h/t ice warrior)]
  • It doesn’t get any braver than this young Caps fan. [Age 30+ (h/t Ted’s Take)]
  • Slightly off-topic, but The Boss has a new book available for pre-order, and we’re happy to pass word of it along as all proceeds are going to charity (and no, that’s not a euphemism for “Michael Nylander‘s salary”). [Amazon via Ted’s Take]
  • The man who is 13th in Caps history in wins is now on Twitter. [@mike_liut]
  • If you’re interested in former Cap Keith Jones but don’t think you can stomach a whole book about him (much less one co-authored by John Buccigross), you might want to check this out. [Flyers]
  • Bear Tracks! [LDN]
  • Plenty of Hershey love in the top AHL stories of the decade (err, the past decade, that is). [The Hockey News]
  • Yes, we’re up big in the Caps Blog-Off finals. But now is no time to take our foot off the gas – vote if you haven’t already. Do it. [NHL Arena]
  • Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1983, “Washington’s Doug Jarvis played in his 600th consecutive NHL game, as the Capitals extended their team-record road undefeated streak to nine straight games (6-0-3) with a 5-2 win over the Red Wings, at Detroit.” Jarvis’s iron man streak would eventually end at 964 games, an NHL record unlikely ever to be broken.
  • Finally, big day for birthdays, with Joe Juneau turning 42, Mike Grier hitting the big 3-5 and Mathieu Perreault celebrating number 22. Happy birthday to all.
