The Noon Number
The Noon Number
7 - Number of hat tricks the Washington Capitals have notched against the Ottawa Senators, the most they have against any single team (tied with Tampa Bay).
Four of those seven have come in Ottawa (where the two teams will play tonight), including a four-goal game for Alex Ovechkin, a three-goal game for Alexander Semin, and three- and four-goal games for Peter Bondra. The other three hatties were banked at home by Ovechkin, Bondra and Todd Krygier.
The Noon Number
16 - Number of games the Capitals have played since their last back-to-back wins (the team has gone 5-9-2 during the stretch). The last time the Caps went that long without consecutive victories was October 12 through November 21, 2007, a span of 18 games over which they went 3-14-1, culminating in the firing of Glen Hanlon.
The Noon Number
4 - Number of wins for the Capitals in their last five trips to Raleigh, where they'll face the Hurricanes tonight. The Caps swept the 'Canes on the latter's home ice in 2010-11 and have split the two games they've played there this season, with the Caps cruising to a 5-1 victory in November before getting shutout 3-0 last month.
The Noon Number
17.4 - Percentage of Capitals' goals under Dale Hunter which have been scored by Alex Ovechkin, a higher percentage of the team's scoring than the captain has had to carry since 2008-09 (when he scored 56 of the team's 272 goals, or 20.6%).
Under Bruce Boudreau earlier in the season, Ovechkin scored just 11.6% of the Caps' goals, after 15.7% in 2009-10 and 14.3% in 2010-11 (in his first four seasons, Ovechkin notched 21.9%, 19.6%, 26.9% and 20.6% of the team's tallies).
The Noon Number
32.4 – Average shots per game for the Caps over their last 5 games, up from 24.6 in the 5 games prior (and a season-long rate of 27.6, tied for fourth-lowest in the NHL). They are just 1-3-1 during that span, putting up their lowest shot total of the five in their one win against Florida.
The Caps have only cracked the 30-shot mark eight times under Dale Hunter, three of which have come in the last five games – prior to their 36-shot performance against the Bruins, the Caps hadn't had at least 30 shots in a game since January 7.
The Noon Number
1 - Number of games the Capitals have won in the past month in which they've allowed a goal.
Since defeating Carolina 2-1 on January 15, the Caps are 4-7-2 with three wins by shutout and a 5-3 win over Boston.
The Noon Number
3 - Number of games since the lockout in which the Caps got goals from three different defensemen - November 5, 2010 (Tyler Sloan, Mike Green and John Carlson), November 26, 2010 (Carlson, John Erskine and Tom Poti) and last night (Dmitry Orlov, Roman Hamrlik and Jeff Schultz).
The Noon Number
1021 - The Caps' all-situation PDO1 under Dale Hunter, via 9.9 shooting (83 for 835) and .922 (940 for 1020) save percentages.
As a point of reference, only three teams have higher PDOs over the course of the 2011-12 campaign so far - the New York Rangers (1030), Boston Bruins (1029) and Vancouver Canucks (1023) - and Hunter's Caps would rank fifth in shooting percentage and sixth in save percentage if compared to the rest of the NHL, season-to-date. The three teams ahead of the Caps have a combined record of 104-45-13; the Caps under Hunter are 16-13-4.
As a further point of reference, Bruce Boudreau's 2011-12 Caps had a PDO of 992 (10.2 Sh%, .890 Sv%) on the heels of a 2010-11 PDO of 1005 (8.5 Sh%, .920 Sv%) and a 2009-10 PDO of 1027 (11.6 Sh%, .910 Sv%).
1 PDO is 1,000*(S%+SV%), and generally tends to regress to 1,000. For some more thoughts on the metric, head over to Arctic Ice Hockey here, here and here and, for a somewhat contrary view, Hockey Analysis.
