Caps Clips
Monday Caps Clips: Slow News Day?
Your savory breakfast links:
- Just because he's missed ten games and been suspended twice, don't count Alex Ovechkin out of the running for MVP. [WaPo]
- Jose Theodore: Money Goaltender. [A Capital Offense]
- Despite an up and down year (literally and figuratively), Karl Alzner is still HF's 26th-best prospect in the League. Michal Neuvirth places... 49th? Seems low. [Hockey's Future]
- Was the trade that brought Joe Corvo to D.C. one of the three worst of the 2009-10 season? [The Hockey News]
- Don Cherry praising AO less than one week after Mike Milbury did the same? These are strange days indeed. [Alex Ovetjkin]
- "[O]ne of the best advertisements the NHL has had going for it since the lockout -- the Sidney Crosby-Alex Ovechkin rivalry -- has been tainted by the introduction of jingoism into the mix by outside forces who have sought to superimpose a Cold War environment into the equation, as if this were 1972 with cheers greeting Bobby Clarke for slashing Valeri Kharlamov across the ankle." Larry Brooks can be so money sometimes. [NY Post]
- On an administrative note, if you haven't taken the time to fill out the SB Nation survey we posted a couple of days ago, please do now. Do it for the kids.
- Speaking of blog administration, you may have noticed three new names on the site's masthead, as we've gone ahead and enlisted a trio of our finest commenters to help us with the thankless job of moderating. Now would be a good time to re-familiarize yourself with our community guidelines and re-dedicate yourself to helping us make this community as great as it can be.
- Last housekeeping note: we've got some sweet shirts up in the Japers' Rink Store, with new ones coming soon. Check 'em out.
- Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1975, "Washington Capitals fired head coach Red Sullivan. The next day General Manager Milt Schmidt took over as coach of the team." Amazingly, Sullivan had replaced Jimmy Anderson - who had compiled a 4-45-5 record behind the bench - and actually managed a lower points percentage than his predecessor, going 2-16-0 in his 18 games as Caps' head coach.
- Finally, happy 33rd birthday to both Tom Poti and Joel Kwiatkowski (separated at birth?), and happy 45th to the late John Kordic.

- To refresh your memory, this is the sixth and final meeting of the season between the Caps and Lightning on the season, with the Caps winning 3-0, 3-2 and 5-4 games and taking a 7-4 loss in Tampa and a 3-2 defeat at home last week.
- Breaking down the Eastern Conference as the end draws nigh. [Corey Masisak]
- The key to the Caps' power-play success? The system. And the talent. But mostly the system. And the talent. [NHL.com]
- Anything below $6.9 million per year would be a steal for Nicklas Backstrom? Yikes. [A Capital Offense]
- And the Hart Trophy winner is... guess. [Star]
- An interview with Alex Ovechkin's mother - worth clicking through just for the picture of young Alex and Gheorghe Muresan. No? [RMNB, Alex Ovetjkin]
- If you can stomach Mike Milbury talking to Colin Campbell (they mention the Ovechkin suspension), more power to you. [Puck Daddy]
- The Bears cruised to an 8-2 win last night for their franchise-best 52nd win of the season... with a dozen left to play. [Patriot-News]
- Is Cody Eakin the Caps' best pick from the 2009 draft? Ask me again in five years. [The Hockey News]
- Speakin' of Eakin, he was named to the All-WHL Eastern Conference second team, while fellow Caps prospect Dan Dunn was named the third-team All-WCHA goaltender.

Friday Caps Clips: A Rare Division Loss

- The pundits aren't picking the Caps. Good. [TSN]
- Which is more impressive - the maturation of Mike Green or the numbers he's put up? OK, fine, it's the numbers. But the maturation is closing the gap, and quickly. [NHL.com]
- Green as the second-best blueliner in the League this season? I can buy that. [Puck Prospectus]
- "Caps most explosive even without 'O' -- and can play D, too" Could you talk in my good ear? I thought I heard you say the Caps can play D, too. [CBSSports]
- You knew it was coming: Jim Kelley ripping Alex Ovechkin. What you might not have seen coming? Kelley ripping Ted Leonsis. And the Caps' PR staff. [SI]
- Jeff Schultz love? Why yes, I'll link to it. [Corey Masisak]
- Ah, the spring of 2008. I remember it like it was two years ago. [Corey Masisak]
- An interview with Jason Chimera completes the Corey hat trick (a natural hattie at that - three in a row). [Corey Masisak]
- Will the Caps bring back Jose Theodore? Should they? It's a cop out, but I'm going with "depends on the price." [RtR]
- The Caps are good today and set up to be good tomorrow. [The Hockey News]
- A little score sheet tidying up. [Dump n' Chase]
- One of your own - Your Nation's Capital - gets a bit of the star treatment. [Barrie Examiner]
- Finally, per the HHoF, on this date back in 2001, "Calle Johansson scored a goal and an assist playing in his 1,000th career NHL game." To date, only four Swedes have played more games in the NHL than Calle Jo.

- Brooks Laich continues to win at life. [D.C. Sports Bog]
- We all know that Brendan Morrison has had his ups and downs this year, but has he ever been the subject of such a cheesily-titled article? [WaPo]
- The Caps have two of the top three lines in hockey. OK, fine, they have the second-best line in hockey and two different right-wings they can play in on it (though not at the same time). [TSN]
- Word's getting out on Nicklas Backstrom. [THN, Corey Masisak (just in case you missed it yesterday)]
- Yes, Alex Ovechkin boarded Brian Campbell four days ago. Yes, Alex Ovechkin was suspended for that hit three days ago (Colin Campbell, by the way, discussed his rationale for the suspension yesterday). And yet, thoughts on the incident and the superstar keep rolling in as people take the time to rehash what has been said and/or come up with something more outrageously dumb than what was out there. [Sportsnet (ridiculous), Versus (absurd), SB Nation (silly), SB Nation (reasonable?), and a poll!]
- On the Caps sans Ovi. [RtR]
- Next up on the list of season goals: the President's Trophy, which is the Caps' to lose. [RMNB]
- On the Caps' dogged determination. [FFODC]

- Some killer Caps cards. [Strange But True]
- Anton Gustafsson and Garrett Mitchell are en route to Hershey... [Patriot-News]
- ... where they clinched their Division last night (what took you guys so long?), tied a single-season franchise mark for wins, and now have their sights set on the best AHL season ever. [Patriot-News]
- Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1989, "Dino Ciccarelli scored four goals and added three assists to set a Washington club record with seven points, in an 8-2 Capitals' win over the Whalers at Harford. It was the 15th hat trick of Ciccarelli's NHL career and his first with Washington." Love me some Dino.
- Finally, bunch o' birthdays today, with Jonas Johansson turning 26, Jan Bulis turning 32, Brantt Myhres turning 36 and Craig Johnson turning 38.

- Several Caps are moving up the single-season franchise leaderboards. [A Capital Offense]
- Scott Walker is happy to be a Cap. [NHLPA]
