The Washington Capitals completed a back-to-back set of road day games with an early-afternoon contest at Madison Square Garden. The New York Rangers broke on top in the first period; the Caps tied it in the second, leaving it for the last 20 minutes for a settlement. Mats Zuccarello’s goal in the ninth minute of the third period broke the tie to give the Rangers the 2-1 win.

Here is Sunday’s plus-minus:

Plus: Philipp Grubauer. When a goalie makes a ton of saves in the first period on the road, it is a cliche that he kept his club in the game. But in this case, Grubauer did just that, his calm presence as the Rangers buzzed in the first 20 minutes keeping the Caps from letting this one get away early.

Minus: Continuity. The Caps seemed to lack it, especially early. They just could not seem to find a way to put consistent pressure on the Rangers.
