The Noon Number: Top Pair of Pairs

58.6 – Combined five-on-five score- and venue-adjusted Corsi-For percentage (CF%) for the Caps’ defensive pairings of Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov (58.9%) and Nate Schmidt and Brooks Orpik (58.4%).

The two pairs, individually, rank first and second in the League in this metric (which measures the share of shot attempts taken by the named player’s team with him/them on the ice) among all duos with at least 180 minutes played (Niskanen-Orlov have played 414 minutes, Schmidt-Orpik 510).

As for the Caps’ other pair, John Carlson and Karl Alzner, the numbers aren’t nearly as sparkling, with the tandem posting a 46.8 score- and venue-adjusted CF%, 92nd in the League among the 123 pairs meeting that 180-minute threshold (and 49th among the 59 pairs that have played as many minutes as Carlson-Alzner’s 358).
