The Noon Number: Not-so-Free Agency Looms

12 – Number of Capitals who dressed in Washington’s Game 7 loss to New York who are under contract for next season: forwards Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Brooks Laich, Troy Brouwer, Jason Chimera, Andre Burakovsky and Tom Wilson, defensemen Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik, John Carlson and Karl Alzner, and goalie Justin Peters. (Michael Latta (healthy-scratched last night) and Dmitry Orlov (injured) are also locked up for another season.)

That means the Caps, as always, have a bushel of free agents to decide upon, including unrestricted free agents Mike Green, Joel Ward, Eric Fehr, Jay Beagle, Curtis Glencross, Tim Gleason and John Erskine, and restricted free agents Braden Holtby, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Marcus Johansson, Nate Schmidt and Philipp Grubauer, among others.

What offseason?

(h/t General Fanager)

You want a piece of weird? Here is one. Starting with the 2009-2010 season, two superstars each have appeared in 51 post season games. Their teams are both 24-27 in those games. Both superstars played on teams that were eliminated in the first round on two occasions. Both superstars are a minus-3 over those 51 games. Both have two game-winning goals. One penalty minute separates them. One has 21 goals, the other has 19.
One is a winner, the other is a loser.
That 2009 Stanley Cup does not have a shelf life for one of those superstars.
