The Caps hit the road this week for their California swing, kicking things off against a team that has historically had their number – the San Jose Sharks. Everyone knows the history by now; it’s been almost six years since the Caps last beat the Sharks in regulation or overtime, and decades since the last time the Caps bested the Sharks at the Shark Tank without needing a shootout.

But that all ended tonight, when Joel Ward collected a rebound in overtime to put the Caps over the top, ending a crazy game – and getting the road trip started right.

Tonight’s Plus/Minus:

  • Plus: Jay Beagle. Not only has he crushed his previous career-high in goals already, but he’s inching closer to his first time in double digits, with his eighth and ninth goals sandwiching a Troy Brouwer tally – which also gives Beagle his second two-goal game in his career (the first coming back in April of last season against the Blackhawks).
  • Minus: Matt Niskanen. This game wasn’t exactly filled with strong defense – by either team – but Niskanen seemed to make the biggest mistakes at the worst times throughout the night.
