Your savory breakfast links:

  • Recaps and other assorted musings on last night’s final preseason game from us, Vogs, NHL.com, Monumental video (Trotz, Ovechkin, Carlson, Kuznetsov, Holtby), CSNMA and Frankovic and from the visitors’ bench, Lighthouse Hockey.
    • The Caps’ power play is back in the groove. [WaPo]
    • Russian machine status: Calibrated. [RMNB, theScore]

    • T.J. Oshie makes even black eyes look adorable. [RMNB]
    • Several times during the broadcast, JoeB and Locker referenced the Isles’ pending team-building trip to the Naval Academy, where NYI coach Jack Capuano will be able to visit with his midshipman son, Anthony. [NY Post]
  • The final roster is starting to take shape:
    • Chandler Stephenson had a very strong camp but has been returned to Hershey. [WaPo]
    • Coach Trotz has perhaps dropped a few hints about the other decisions he needs to make. [CSNMA, and again]

  • Prospect updates:
    • For his sophomore season, Brian Pinho has moved from wing to center for the defending national champion Providence Friars and they demolished Simon Fraser 9-1 in an exhibition game on Saturday. They open the regular season next weekend at Miami (OH). [@MarkDivver, Friars Athletics]
    • Shane Gersich scored twice in the span of 12 seconds to help North Dakota to a 8-3 exhibition victory over Manitoba. [Game Highlights (Gersich goals in the second period)]
    • Newly-minted alternate captain Tommy DiPauli and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame won’t open their exhibition season until next week against Guelph, but I did find this terrific video of a fishing trip he took over the summer. [ND Hockey Tumblr, @NDHockey]
    • Forward prospect Steven Spinner is an entering freshman at Nebraska-Omaha, joining a squad that reached the Frozen Four last season and is ranked #10 in the nation, its highest preseason ranking in program history. [omaha.com]
    • You may recall that defenseman prospect Colby Williams was unable to participate in the rookie tournament due to a mysterious injury sustained sometime around development camp. Well, it turns out his forearm was severely injured when it went through a glass table. He is rehabbing the injury now and hopes to assume his duties as captain and top-pairing blueliner for the Regina Pats by December. [Leader-Post]
  • Finally, perhaps the greatest part of the Ovechkin versus Crosby debate is that TEN full seasons later, us hockey fans are still gifted with the tremendous hockey played by both of them, and still no definitive answer. [THN]
