The Noon Number: King Karl

8 – Number of five-on-five shot attempts for Karl Alzner in Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Panthers. Of those eight shot attempts, two were on-goal, two missed the net and the other four were blocked… but one of the “on-goal” shots ended up “in-goal,” giving Alzner a career high three goals on the season.

Of further note, the eight five-on-five shot attempts were a career high for Alzner (per war-on-ice.com), besting his previous high of seven set on December 20, 2008 (his 13th NHL game), and it was only his third career goal in 190 regular-season games at Verizon Center (it was also his first goal on a Sunday and first in January).

Alzner’s shot output was part of a big effort from the Caps’ blueline, as the group registered 24 shot attempts at five-a-side, second-highest total on the season (25 at St. Louis), which represented 48% of the team’s five-on-five shot attempts, the third highest percentage on the season (56% at St.Louis, 50% at Arizona).
