Saturday Caps Clips: Bedeviled; Capitals @ Islanders Game Day

Your savory breakfast links:

  • If you could fire either Adam Oates or George McPhee (but not both!) right now, who would go? We weigh in and air some grievances. [Rink]
  • Putting Alex Ovechkin‘s lovely plus-minus rating into a bit of historical context, even though context of any kind is often frowned upon. [Rink]
  • Recaps of last night’s tough loss to the Devils from us, Vogs, Monumental video (Oates, Chimera, Backstrom, Ovechkin), NHL.com, AP, SportsXchange, WaPo (gamer, blog), CSNW (gamer, blog), DSP, Peerless, RMNB, Fire & Ice, NJ.com (and again) and In Lou We Trust.
    • The Devils were working with a shortened bench thanks to some injuries up front, including Patrik Elias, who left after a tough hit from Tom Wilson. [CBS Sports, SI.com]
    • Meanwhile Ovechkin finished last night’s game a plus-one because he *GASP* scored an even-strength goal, bringing him up to 49 goals on the season. Suck it, haters. [PHT]
    • Unfortunately, a goal late in the third proved to be the game-winner for the Devils – and it’ll do no good to point fingers. [NHL.com]
  • Previews of this evening’s battle with the Islanders from Vogs, NHL.com and AP, and be sure to check out our uber-awesome SB Nation pals over at Lighthouse Hockey for the other side of tonight’s matchup.
  • A look at a few more reasons why Oates’s tenure behind the Caps’ bench may be coming to an end. [F Street Faithful]
  • News and notes from yesterday’s pregame skate:
    • In general. [Monumental video (Oates, Ovechkin, Strachan, Rinkside Update/Alzner)]
    • After Tuesday night’s debacle, the team held a meeting – one that included George McPhee. Will it make a difference? [CSNW]
    • There’s still a chance for the Caps to make the playoffs – they just need to right the ship. Or ram it into an iceberg. [Pressbox DC]
    • Let’s just leave this quote here: “[The Ovechkin-Beagle] line hasn’t hurt us.” Discuss. [WaPo]
    • For a while it looked as if Connor Carrick was going to draw back into the lineup for the first time in seven games… [WaPo]
    • …but alas, ’twas not to be, as the Caps recalled defenseman Tyson Strachan from Hershey, instead. Sorry, Bears. [Caps, Patriot-News]
    • Speaking of Carrick, it’s pretty amazing that the Caps chose to keep him in the NHL most of the year. And then healthy scratch him. And then not make him available to Hershey for the playoffs. Just…amazing. [Patriot-News]
  • All Ovi, all the time:
    • Ovechkin is never going to be a defensive stalwart, but it’s a team game and his team hasn’t been helping him out. This is a hard concept for some people to grasp. [NBC4]
    • But hey, he does make a handy scapegoat for a coach whose seat may be getting a tad bit toasty. [Puck Daddy]
    • So about that – after getting called out by his coach, Ovechkin kindly reminded everyone that it’s a team sport, and everyone should share the blame… [WaPo, CSNW]
    • …which obviously makes him a horrible, horrible person who does not deserve to live (or defend himself). [SI.com, Puck Daddy]
  • Prospect watch:
    • Caleb Herbert‘s professional debut was the stuff dreams are made of, as the newest Hershey Bear picked up a goal, an assist and first-star honors in a crucial win. [Patriot-News]
    • In a season full of bad, you have to grab at what good you can find – and the recent signing of promising prospect Madison Bowey is good. [Talk the Red]
    • More on Andre Burakovsky‘s OHL Player of the Month honor, which is probably not as important to him as the fact that his Otters are up 2-0 in their second-round series. [CSNW]
  • The Washington Capitals are probably not making the playoffs. The Washington Wizards definitely are. Forget it, Jake, it’s Chinatown. [WNST]
  • Chatting with Caps’ postgame host, Montreal native and member of the Tribe Ben Raby about his background and his role as the Dr. Phil to our crazy, crazy fans. [Baltimore Jewish Times]
  • Finally, because we could all use a laugh… here’s Brooks Laich teaching you five things every man should know how to do, with a little help from Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dustin Penner:
