Saturday Caps Clips: Blackhawks Down

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Yesterday’s must-read was this “boom goes the dynamite” article detailing just how dysfunctional this organization has become, from the top down. [WaPo]
  • Recaps and other assorted musings on last night’s shutout victory over Chicago from us (…sorta), Vogs, Monumental video (Oates, Beagle, Fehr, Backstrom), NHL.com, AP, CBS Sports, WaPo, CSNW (gamer, blog), Frankovic, Peerless, DSP, and RMNB, and for the Chi-town take, CSN Chicago, Sun-Times, Tribune (with pics), Hockeenight, and Second City Hockey.
    • It may have been a meaningless game as far as the standings were concerned, but it wasn’t meaningless for Jay Beagle, who had himself a pretty special night. [WaPo, CSNW (video), RMNB]
    • Jaroslav Halak earned his first shutout as a Cap (in what may have been his last game as a Cap) and sidestepped questions afterward about the rumored kerfuffle with Adam Oates. [STL Today]
    • Last night’s win wasn’t without it’s rough patches, as Marcus Johansson left the game after being hit with a Nicklas Backstrom shot and is out for tomorrow’s season finale. Poor MoJo. [PHT]
  • No morning skate yesterday, but Troy Brouwer and Oates each briefly met with the media for a little pregame chat. [Monumental video (Oates, Brouwer), CSN Chicago]
  • The Caps are playing for pride and trying to finish strong for the fans… although speaking as fans, we would have appreciated this kind of effort earlier in the season. We’re so high maintenance. [WaPo, Caps Outsider]
  • Pierre Lebrun speculates that Alex Ovechkin “could” be approached by the KHL, a la Ilya Kovalchuk. Of course, he also thinks -35 is “almost” -50, so… [TSN, ESPN]
  • Apparently Ovechkin’s 51 goals were all completely useless. I guess we’ll just ignore the ones that tied or won games for the Caps, because facts are too hard. [SI.com]
  • Talking George McPhee‘s future with the organization, pending free agents and any number of other hot topics from the past week. [CSNW, Capitals Hill (podcast)]
  • A look back at the last 81 games, as Game #82 lies ahead tomorrow… followed by a too-long summer. [CSNW]
  • Every team has costly injuries over the course of the season; for the Caps, their costliest loss this year was Brooks Laich. [Bleacher Report]
  • After the Caps’ regular season wraps up, defenseman Tyson Strachan can head to Hershey to help their playoff push – but will need to clear waivers, first. [Patriot-News]
  • Speaking of that playoff push, it’s still going strong for the Bears despite an overtime loss last night, as they maintain their hold on the 8th and final playoff spot in the East. [Patriot-News]
  • Finally, happy 61st birthday to Mike Bloom, happy 65th to Bob Girard, happy 60th to Antero Lehtonen, and happy 40th to Roman Hamrlik.
