Capitals-Kings: Postgame Quotes

From the team:

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on losing Nicklas Backstrom…

“Obviously, you miss Backy [Nicklas Backstrom], but every team has guys that go out. You’ve got 19 other guys to do the job. We’ve got plenty of other guys that can do the job.”

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on Evgeny Kuznetsov’s first goal…

“It was a big goal that actually got us a point. Shorthanded. It was a good play. We won a draw, Orly [Dmitry Orlov] makes a nice run up the ice, which gives us a chance to get the goalie out. We dumped it in, and then I’m sure they relaxed just enough; it’s a weird situation. Sometimes those goals go in. It was a big goal for him and us; it gets us a point.”

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin the Capitals play in their own zone…

“We made mistakes in our zone. We didn’t do the right thing and it almost cost us [both] points. It is good in this position [to get] one point. If you take two periods and maybe five minutes in the third, [I think] we deserved two points tonight.”

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin on his collision with defenseman Jack Hillen…

“I lost my breathing. I didn’t see him…I just turned and he came to me. There was nothing I could do [to avoid it].”

Washington Capitals forward Marcus Johansson on losing after having a two-goal lead…

“There’s no excuse. We have to find a way to win when we are up two goals. I think we have to be more careful with the puck in certain places, take plays when they’re there and when [the play is not there], try to make the right play.”

Washington Capitals forward Marcus Johansson on the fine line between making the playoffs and missing them…

“It hurts a lot [not getting the second point]. You never know when it comes down to it – in or out [of the playoffs] by one point, you never know. Hopefully it doesn’t [come down to one point]. It was good to come back when [Evgeny Kuznetsov] scored a goal when we’re down one man with one minute to go. It’s a good sign for us.”

Los Angeles Kings head coach Darryl Sutter on if his team was more comfortable as the game progressed…

“We were not as sharp as we like to be early. Took a couple of penalties, and we know their power play, and they scored on them. We just kind of hung in there.”

Los Angeles Kings head coach Darryl Sutter on having to make adjustments playing 5-on-5…

“We weren’t as sharp as we like to be in the first. I think when Backstrom [Nicklas Backstrom] went out, that made obviously a difference in terms of how they use the bench. Similar to how we were a few games ago when we lost Brown [Dustin Brown].”

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty and his team coming back in the third period…

“I think it was a good character win. The boys stuck together, stuck with it. We knew the whole time we were going to get back in that game. That was our entire mindset. It was just continue to bang at it [and] take over that third period and get back in it. We should have won it in regulation but just had a couple minor breakdowns on that goal.”

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty on goaltender Jonathan Quick…

“He was good. I’m sure [goaltender Martin Jones] will get the next game and give [Quick] a little break, but he played great both games, and we needed those four points, and that’s what we did. We came here and got them.”

Los Angeles Kings forward Anze Kopitar on what really fueled the third period comeback…

“After the second [period], we still felt we were right in it. It certainly helped coming out of the intermission and scoring in the first minute. It gave us some lift. We were able to build a lead late in the period, but at the end of the day, the two points are all that matter.”

Los Angeles Kings forward Anze Kopitar on whether he felt the Capitals game-tying goal was deflating…

“We were still on the power play so we were trying to obviously score and finish it off in the OT, [but] that didn’t happen. Like I said, it’s [still] good. Lots of character shown to come back first of all, and then it could have been a little bit of a deflating moment [giving up the late goal], but we held strong.”
