The Noon Number: Five and Alive

5 – Number of standing points earned by the Caps on last week’s critical and surprisingly successful (especially for this team, historically) swing through California, tied for most among any of the 16 teams who have taken a similar trip this season (i.e. three-straight games against the three California teams). An overview of how everyone has fared:

Team Anaheim Los Angeles San Jose Goals For Goals Against Points
Chicago W W SO 8 4 4 5
Washington W SO W 6 5 1 5
Philadelphia L W W 10 7 3 4
New Jersey W W L 7 6 1 4
Toronto W W L 8 9 -1 4
Columbus W O L 7 7 0 3
Detroit L W L 4 6 -2 2
Buffalo L L W 9 12 -3 2
Calgary L W L 8 11 -3 2
Carolina L L W 7 10 -3 2
Vancouver L L W 6 10 -4 2
Boston L L W 5 10 -5 2
N.Y. Islanders L L W 4 10 -6 2
N.Y. Rangers L W L 5 16 -11 2
Ottawa L O L 6 11 -5 1
Tampa Bay O L L 3 11 -8 1

Of further note, both Montreal and Florida had 1-2-0 trips to California that were interrupted by detours to Phoenix in the middle. Pittsburgh is the only other Eastern Conference team not on the table above, and they’re also the only Eastern Conference team that doesn’t have at least three Pacific time-zone games in a row on their 2013-14 schedule.
