Capitals-Maple Leafs: Postgame Quotes

Via the team:

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on the play of forwards Joel Ward and Jason Chimera

“I’ve counted on [Joel Ward} Wardo and [Jason Chimera] Chimmer all year long. They play together-penalty kill, power play. Big bodies that we count on for a lot of minutes to get territory for us. It’s good to see them get rewarded because you don’t get a lot of accolades based on that. You know, doing grunt work.”

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on going out West…

“You’ve got to win them all….We haven’t played L.A. yet, but we played Anaheim here. We could’ve won the game, and San Jose same thing. I know they’re better than us in the standings, but you’ve got to have the attitude you’re going to beat them.”

Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward on playing with Jason Chimera…

“[Jason Chimera] Chimmer is one of the fastest guys in the league. I just try to give him the puck. There’s no secret. The defense is aware when he’s out there. I just try to hide in the weeds and try to look for some loose pucks.”

Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward on the play of his line…

“We want to contribute five-on-five. First we want to do that. Obviously special teams is huge nowadays, but you’re not going to be on the power play all the time or penalty kill. You’ve got to establish a good five-on-five game. Get the pucks in deep.”

Washington Capitals forward Troy Brouwer on the play of Joel Ward…

“We’re really happy for the guy. We’re really happy he gets rewarded for what he does. A lot of the time he and Chimmer [Jason Chimera] and Fehrsie [Eric Fehr] get overshadowed because of the names that we have our team. Night in and night out, I think they are our most consistent line, and that’s why they stick together. They are unsung for us.”

Washington Capitals forward Troy Brouwer on the line juggling during the game…

“The last little bit, you can see as the game goes on, he [Adam Oates] kind of puts Beags [Jay Beagle] with Ovi [Alex Ovechkin] and Jojo [Marcus Johansson] and moves Nick [Nicklas Backstrom] around depending on who needs a little bit of help. He’s [Adam Oates] kind of balancing the lines defensively to make sure that we are able to hold these leads. In the last few games, we played the last 10-12 minutes with those lines.”

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle on trying to dig out of an early hole…

“Obviously we were pretty flat the first period. We didn’t really skate. It looked like we were still in for our afternoon nap. Playing an afternoon game just took us a good part of the game to get warmed up and get awake for us. We gave ourselves a chance to get back into the hockey game by scoring a couple of goals.”

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle on the special teams battle tonight…

“They won the special teams battle and they built a 3-0 lead. We were fortunate to get ourselves back into the game. Bottom line is we weren’t sharp enough and we didn’t play with enough energy or desperation in this hockey game.”

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer on coming out flat tonight…

“We weren’t good enough in the first ten minutes. It just happens. You can’t spot a team three goals. We just weren’t sharp, you know? Myself included. And it cost us. I thought we dominated the second [period] and the third was anyone’s game, but we couldn’t quite climb out of the three goal hole.”

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer on trying to stop the Capitals…

“We obviously know their strong point. You look at [Alex] Ovechkin and he has 40 something goals. He’s a heck of a goal scorer. When he gets in the sweet spot it’s almost guaranteed to go in the net. Every time we played [the Capitals] we kind of played them the same way, and tonight they found a way to get by us. Kudos to them. They made some good plays.”

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Troy Bodie on the importance of the power play tonight…

“They got a good power play. We know that. They kind of picked us apart. We know not to take penalties against them. It was unfortunate our [penalty kill] just didn’t get those first couple [of goals].”

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Troy Bodie on finding consistency…

“You don’t like to make excuses or anything. The road’s been kind of tough on us, a lot of travel and some tough games. We’ve got to learn to [be] consistent and come out hard every game, get games started well. Try to focus on that.”
