The Noon Number: Locking Up the Pieces

3 – Number of players on the current NHL roster set to become free agents this summer, restricted or unrestricted, after the team inked soon-to-be RFA Dmitry Orlov to a two-year extension earlier today. Orlov was the only player set to head to restricted free agency, with Mikhail Grabovski and deadline acquisitions Dustin Penner and Jaroslav Halak scheduled to become unrestricted free agents if not re-signed before July 1.

Per Capgeek, the Caps have a little over $16 million in cap space to work with next year (based on a projected 2014-15 salary cap of $71.1 million, and not including this deal… so knock it down to $14 million) – which means plenty of flexibility. Stay tuned…
