Coming off an embarrassing Hockey Night in Canada night loss in Toronto following what was probably their most impressive win of the season a night earlier against the New York Islanders, the Washington Capitals entered Tuesday night’s home game against Vancouver once again trying to convince onlookers (and perhaps themselves) that they’re more the team that beat the Isles than the one that got thumped by the Leafs.

Unfortunately on this night, the Caps were outplayed early, destroyed on their penalty kill and unable to keep up on the scoreboard en route to a 4-3 loss, dropping their home record to a decidedly unimpressive 5-5-3. Here’s Tuesday night’s Plus/Minus:

Plus/Minus:

  • Plus: John Carlson doubled his season goal total in the second period, putting a pair of pucks past Ryan Miller and notching his first career multi-goal game. Credit Carlson, of course, but also Tom Wilson and Joel Ward for screening Miller. That’s the type of net presence the Caps haven’t been getting enough of. (Carlson would add an assist later for good measure).
  • Minus: The Caps let the Canucks‘ fourth line run roughshod over them for the first half of the game, with the trio of Derek Dorestt, Bo Horvat and Jannik Hansen all pointing on the first goal of the game (Dorsett from Horvat and Hansen) and drawing a pair of penalties (Hansen and Dorsett), both of which Vancouver capitalized on. The Caps’ fourth line of Jason Chimera, Andre Burakovsky and Jay Beagle was/is untenable… and that’s not on Burakovsky.
  • Bonus Minus! The 1-for-4 penalty kill, which has now killed off just five of the last 13 penalties it’s faced. Woof.

And now, this from Brooks Laich
