The Noon Number: Burying the Lead

4 – Number of points the Capitals have squandered so far this season by losing games which they led after two periods (via a 4-1-2 record in those situations), the same number that they coughed up last season (via a 24-0-4 mark).

The three third-period leads the Caps have failed to hold this year in games they eventually lost (versus Montreal, Detroit and Calgary last night) is four short of the seven total third-period leads they couldn’t convert into wins a season ago, which included three games in which they took a lead in the third period and lost in regulation.

Of further note, the Caps have blown a lead in each game of the current five-game losing streak, and have blown them in the 35th, 45th, 30th, 40th and 55th minutes of the games.
