Two goals from Alex Ovechkin got the Capitals to overtime but a late penalty to Nicklas Backstrom sank Washington when John Tavares won the game with 23 seconds left. An even sixty minutes was undone by the two minute minor and the Capitals’ division rival grabbed the extra point.

Plus/Minus:

  • Plus: Ovechkin’s two power play tallies are his first score since his game winner in Colorado. The Captain carried Washington offense through regulation and is the only reason the Capitals picked up a point.
  • Minus: Backstrom finished the game with two minor penalties – one in the third and the fatal minor in overtime. His needless Hold the Stick penalty against Brock Nelson in the offensive zone wound up killing the Capitals.
