8 – Number of one-goal losses the Capitals have been saddled with so far this season (five in regulation, one in overtime and two in the shootout), second-most in the League (Colorado, 9). Washington’s 13 one-goal games are third-most in the NHL (Anaheim and Colorado, 14), and their win percentage in those games near the bottom of the League.
On the plus side, winning one-goal games doesn’t appear to be a repeatable team skill (contrary to conventional wisdom), so presumably at some point the Caps’ luck (or “luck”) will turn. And that’s a good thing, because they sure do like to play close games – 82% of the total minutes the Caps have played so far this season have been with the score within a single goal one way or the other.
