Lineup Miscues: Oates vs. Potato

In the style of PPP's famous post, I wanted to look at the lineup choices Oates has made. There are a few simple rules here for Potato. First, the roster will be what it was in the beginning of September, and specifically when JP made his Venn Depth Chart post for this season. Second, Potato will not have GMGM make a trade and will only call someone up if it is necessary to fill a spot. Third, Potato will use the Venn Depth Chart to determine lineup spots, with one change that pretty much every commenter agreed on - Johansson is above Laich on the LW depth chart. If a player is listed at multiple positions, they will go to the position that they are higher at on the depth chart. Potato will also follow Oates' handedness doctrine, for ease of comparison.

Following these rules, the depth chart by position is this, in order:

LW: Erat, Johansson, Laich, Chimera, Volpatti

C: Backstrom, Grabovski, Perreault, Beagle, Latta

RW: Ovechkin, Brouwer, Fehr, Ward

LD: Alzner, Erskine, Hillen

RD: Carlson, Green, Oleksy, Kundratek

G: Holtby, Neuvirth

(This roster does fit under the salary cap, but there is not space to fit Orlov unless both Kundratek and Latta are sent down.)

Going off that depth chart, the opening night lineup that Potato would ice looks like this:

F: Erat-Backstrom-Ovechkin; Johansson-Grabovski-Brouwer; Laich-Perreault-Fehr; Chimera-Beagle-Ward

D: Alzner-Carlson; Erskine-Green; Hillen-Oleksy

G: Holtby (Neuvirth as backup)

Now compare this to the actual season opener lineup:

F: Johansson-Backstrom-Ovechkin; Laich-Grabovski-Brouwer; Chimera-Fehr-Ward; Erat-Latta-Wilson

D: Alzner-Green; Erskine-Carlson; Hillen-Carrick

G: Holtby (Neuvirth as backup)
